San Mateo is definitely an underrated city in the San Francisco Bay Area. San Mateo Central Park is one of San Mateo’s hidden gem adjacent to downtown. Located at 50 E 5th Ave, this 16-acre park has many amenities. There is a Japanese Garden, Baseball field, rose garden, and tennis court all located inside the park. The park hosts many events throughout the year and even an ice-skating ring in the winter.

There are multiple entrances to the park as it is in a large square block downtown. The entrance on 5th Ave has a parking structure underneath the tennis courts and is free to park.
There are several picnic areas that can be reserved on their website for different fees depending on the size. You also reserve the rose garden as a wedding venue! On the weekends there is also a train that goes around the park, perfect for your little ones.
The Central Park Recreation Center also located inside the park offers aerobic classes and a space to rent. Adjacent to the recreation center are the restrooms and a water fountain.
The Japanese Garden is free to get in and they even have Koi feedings! They close fairly early as the hours are only Monday-Friday from 10 am – 3 pm.
There is plenty of grass space and seating making San Mateo Central Park the perfect park to enjoy with the family, relax, or just take a stroll.
